Learn to punt like the Pros

25 Aug

In the world of online sportsbooks, there are really only two types of punters. There are those who play and learn and there are those who play and lose. Notice that I made no mention of those who play and win because in sports betting it’s all about chalking up experience as you gear up for a big payday. Patience and knowledge will set you up beautifully on your way to windfall winnings. I liken sports betting to playing Texas Hold’em Poker – you fold many hands, you bluff and you wait your turn. Because one day the big win is going to come your way – so play intelligently and avoid a mad rush of blood to the head.
How to wager responsibly in sports betting

Online sportsbooks are powerful portals for placing wagers on teams, individuals, events and the like. The object is to place a wager (most of them are sophisticated wagers) on an outcome. It doesn’t matter if you believe in the outcome or not, you simply need to consider it as a possibility that you’re willing to bet on. Therein lies the first rule: detachment. Don’t for a second think that you need to feel passionate about the outcome you’re considering; it’s a bet – plain and simple. Of course when you go into the nuts and bolts of the games then it makes a whole lot of sense to have as much knowledge as possible. By this I don’t mean insider knowledge or anything vaguely underhanded – I mean learn about the sport and/or events and make educated bets. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Read up as much as possible about the sport you are betting on (newspapers, periodicals, digests, club news, local reports, radio and Internet are great sources of info). Things like home and away stats are important considerations. Also which players are sitting out, which players are taking to the field? What are the coach’s thoughts? What about sponsors? There’s a lot to consider, so play it safe.
  • Understand the types of bets you’re prepared to make. For instance do you know what straight bets are, or even moneylines? If you’re betting on team sports then the way bets work is different to individual player sports. Baseball is a classic case of moneyline betting.
  • What is your bankroll looking like? And more importantly, are you prepared to lose what you want to gamble with? I always advise wannabe pro-punters to search deep for these answers before they punt.
  • Do you understand that sportsbetting is not a science? There is certainly an element of risk involved especially since outcomes are not guaranteed. With many team sports and individual sports being decided by the play on the day, it can turn out to be a shocker for punters playing by the stats.
  • My last tip of the day (more to follow in the next post) is this: Only play at reputable online sportsbooks offering you safe and secure gaming and reliable payouts. Select the best odds and payment processing options.

These tips will get you started on your path to sportsbetting glory. Remember that it’s not a perfect science and practice is needed to learn the ropes and understand the way in which bets, payouts and software programs operate. Until next time – happy punting!
